US president-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday nominated Ron Johnson, a former ambassador to El Salvador, to be his envoy to Mexico.
If confirmed, Johnson will have a daunting brief of pushing Mexico to reduce the northward flow of migrants and drugs.
Some of his Republican colleagues have supported use of the US military to take on drug cartels in Mexico.
“[In El Salvador] he worked tirelessly with Salvadoran authorities and our team to reduce violent crime and illegal migration to the lowest levels in History,” Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social.
